What Is copywork?Copywork is simply when you give your children quality written works to emulate. While doing copywork, their attention is automatically drawn (without realizing) to proper letter formation, spacing, capitalization, punctuation, grammar and even spelling.
Copywork is well know as one of the key components in a Charlotte Mason Education or Classical Education.
Beginners start by practicing to trace and write letters, moving onto words, and then go from there to simple sentences. As they progress, they can write longer more complex sentences and move into cursive.
In a Charlotte Mason Education the natural progression is gentle – Copywork – then – Dictation – then – Narration. But copywork is our focus today and I believe is great for all ages.
We have loved using copywork and great handwriting programs like Handwriting Without Tears, A Reason For Handwriting and The Good and the Beautiful Handwriting throughout this process.
My girls have copied quotations from famous historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr, historical facts from our The Good and the Beautiful History, a small section from our current literature book or the Copywork included with our Brave Writer – Arrows, and we have also copied a lot of Scripture directly from the Bible or my Free 25 Days of Christ-Centered Christmas Copywork.
Why should I use Copywork in homeschoolCopywork is a neat little trick that homeschoolers use to help their kids get better at handwriting, writing papers, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. It’s basically just copying down passages from books or other sources. It might sound like a boring activity, but it can actually be pretty cool!
By copying out good writing, kids can start to pick up on things like sentence structure, word choice, and flow. They can also get more familiar with the way different writers use language to convey meaning and tell stories. Plus, copying can be a pretty meditative activity – it can help kids focus and get into a good headspace for learning.
But copywork isn’t just about improving writing skills. It can also be a way for kids to learn about history, science, and other topics. For example, if you’re studying a particular time period in history, you could have your child copy out important documents or speeches from that time. This would give them a deeper understanding of what was going on during that era, and would also help them remember key facts and figures.

4. Composition SkillsReading and copying good literature familiarizes students with the grammar and rhythm of effective writing. The result is often improvement in their own composition skills.

It’s for all ages, not just children. If you want your children to be a better writer, have them copy good writing. Have them start a copywork notebook or journal. Any time they hear or read well-crafted words, have them jot them down. My daughters have scripture notebooks that we write a scripture or two in everyday. This not only helps them be better writers, but they are also hiding the Word in their hearts as well.
And it all starts with copywork.
